As a start to reach out and interact with our surrounding communities, we have initiated some community craft projects to dovetail with our ELLI organic beauty ranges. The settlement of Tesselaarsdal nestles in the mountains between Caledon and Hermanus in the Western Cape of South Africa. The people of the village live close to mother nature, treasuring the simple values of life. They have through generations developed a strong affinity for craft. We at Elli organic wanted to associate our organic product range with articles created in this rural area. We asked senior group Tessalonika to assist in rolling out the project and we were humbled by their enthusiasm and dedication.
The profit generated by the project will be applied for their help-a-neighbour-initiative – as a group and as individuals. The concept is simple, if you receive a blessing, money, food – you share it with your neighbour : what an inspiring idea. Even though it is a community project, for the community – we wanted the articles to have the characteristics of our ELLI brand. Grown and crafted in Africa and Organic. We have started with a knitting& crochet project with organic cotton : baby cloths and baby blankets. The community center Lombardy in Hermanus has a group of dedicated and talented ladies who love sewing crafts. They had most of the equipment, but few projects.
We introduced them to our “baby toy elephant” project, made with knitted organic cotton to the design of our Baby elephant emblem for ELLI organic Baby. As we become more specialised, we will slowly introduce new items like baby linen. The community center at Hawston specialises in ceramics, so we wanted to utilise their talent in a product that could work with our ELLI organic range. We are exploring a porcelain candle holder for our home range and a ceramic box for our solid perfume.
